According to Peter Graff of Reuters.com, the pope will continue in office until 1900 GMT on February 28 before stepping down to allow the election of a new pope. Pope Benedict XVI was elected to papacy last April 2005 and due to his health condition, he can no longer have the strength to lead the entire catholic church. Before we witness the search for the next pope, here are some facts about Benedict XVI, our pope for almost 8 years: 1. Pope Benedict XVI was born Joseph Alois Ratzinger on April 16, 1927. 2. He is the first pope to use the twitter to get in touch to billions of catholic. A smart move since social media sites are hit today and people have no time for traditional newspaper, magazine, and television to witness his message. Here's the screen grab of his first tweet: 3. He is the 15th pope named Benedict. He chose the pontifical name Benedict in honor of Pope Benedict XV and St.Benedict of Nursia. Benedict comes from the Latin word which means "the blessed." 4. He is the first pope to own an iPod! 5. He is the oldest pope to be elected at the age of 78 since Clement XII in 1730. 6. He was a United States' prisoner of war during the World War II. 7. He has 6 email addresses which differ according to language. His English email address is [email protected]. 8. Speaking of language, Pope Benedict XVI can speak fluent English, Italian, French, and Spanish, aside from his mother-tongue which is German. 9. He doesn't know how to drive a car.
